The South Shore introduces the vacationer to Lake Nipissing. Hwy. 654, also known as Wasi Road, brings you into a region famous for fine fishing, comfortable resorts and excellent camping. Lake Nipissing has many sheltered bay areas and islands for fishing.

This major lake offers great opportunities for boating, windsurfing and sunbathing on fine beaches. In winter there is ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross country skiing.

Travelling the many side roads is a great way to explore this picturesque region. Wasi Falls Road takes you to the Wasi Falls, at the mouth of the Wasi River, which flows into Lake Nipissing. This enchanting spot is a major spawning are for pike and pickerel (walleye).

   
Just prior to reaching Callander there is a scenic lookout over Lake Nipissing, providing spectacular sunset views. An historic plaque at the site explains the formation of the Nipissing Basin during the glacial retreat.
   
  Callander has much to offer including tennis courts, boat launching, marinas with boat & motor rentals, the North Bay Yacht Club, Centennial Park Beach or Sunbeam Beach, both located on Main St., numerous artisans and craftspeople offering pottery, dough art, watercolour paintings, etc.
   
callander house Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe, world famous country doctor to the Dionne Quintuplets, had his residence and practice in this eight-room, beautifully maintained building from 1914 to 1943. Besides the extensive Dionne Quint collection available to browse through, the museum also features Callander area’s Shipping, Logging, Red Cross Nursing and Sports records and artifacts which will delight many history enthusiasts. The Alex Dufresne Gallery features six changeable Art Exhibit each year; these exhibitions highlight the fine talents and craftspeople from area artists.
   
Ice Fishing The winter fishery in the Near North is constantly expanding. Many experienced ice fishermen consider ice fishing in the area to be the best in Ontario. When the ice forms, the pickerel (walleye), yellow perch, pike, herring and whitefish roam hungrily through the waters, providing exciting action for the angler. Lodge and resort owners have ice huts placed in productive spots.
